Does Auto Insurance Cover the Car or the Driver?
JWB Insurance often hears from our clients who are unsure if their auto insurance covers the car, the driver or both. Let’s break down how coverage typically works and what you should know before borrowing or lending a vehicle.
How Does Auto Insurance Work?
In most cases, auto insurance follows the car, not the driver. This means that if you lend your vehicle to someone else, your insurance policy is usually the primary coverage if there’s an accident. The person borrowing your car may have their own insurance, but your policy is generally the first to cover damage or liability claims.
Scenarios to Consider
The following scenarios may affect your auto insurance coverage:
- Borrowing a car: If you borrow someone else’s car with their permission, their insurance is typically the primary coverage. Your own policy may provide secondary coverage, but only in certain situations.
- Lending your car: When you lend your car, your insurance is usually responsible for any damage or liability, even if you aren’t driving.
- Excluded drivers: Your coverage may not apply to someone who’s specifically excluded from your policy. Alternatively, if someone regularly uses your vehicle but is not listed on the policy, accidents occurring while they’re behind the wheel may not be covered.
- Rental cars: Auto insurance for rental vehicles can be more complex, often involving both your personal policy and the rental company’s coverage.
What About the Driver?
There may be exceptions. For example, if the damages exceed your policy limits, the driver’s own insurance may help cover the remaining costs. On the other hand, coverage may be denied if the driver is not listed or is excluded from your policy. Generally, you should make sure anyone who consistently uses your vehicle, such as a spouse, teenage child or babysitter, is listed on the policy.
